My name is Michael Walton and I want to serve the people of Cumberland as Village Councillor. I have deep roots in the community with four generations of my family residing in Cumberland. Since retiring and moving back to Cumberland I have come to appreciate the hard work and leadership of the Mayor and past council and the myriad of volunteer groups and societies that are the heart of our vibrant community. Community sustainability has at its core participatory processes to determine what residents envision. The Official Community Plan is the result of that type of process and if elected, I want to continue the process of creating the sustainable community envisioned by the people and embodied in our OCP

I offer insight from legal advocacy and the experience of a small business owner of my law firm. I also bring my construction understanding from being a tradesman and a volunteer’s perspective from decades of service on community boards. As a lawyer I practiced labour, employment and human rights law and acted as a negotiator for both union and employer clients. Prior to returning to school in my late thirties I worked in carpentry after apprenticing with the Campbell River local of the Carpenter’s Union.

My volunteer work includes: Halston Hills Housing Co-Operative, Vice-President; BC Industrial Relations Association, President; BC Treaty Commission (Lower Mainland Regional Advisory Committee), Labour Representative; Burnaby Douglas NDP Federal Riding Association, President; Kootenay Society for the Handicapped, Director; BC Human Rights Coalition, Regional Representative; Carpenters’ Union, Local 1719, Treasurer.

On November 15 mark an X beside Walton and send me to Council to do my part in building our community driven future.
